How FinTrU Employees are Making the Most of Their Sabbaticals
TUESDAY 24 JANUARY 2023
The FinTrU Unplugged initiative entitles all employees to a four-week paid sabbatical after five years' service. Vice President Raymond Walsh kept it Country and headed off to Nashville...

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WITH FINTRU?
I have been working with FinTrU since July 2017. I am currently a Vice President, leading a team in the Compliance/Financial Crime space.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST THOUGHT WHEN YOU HEARD ABOUT FINTRU UNPLUGGED ?
I thought it was a great initiative to reward employees who have been here for five plus years. Most people do not get the chance to take a longer period of time off work so it immediately caught my interest and I was quickly planning to use it the moment I hit my designated time of service.
SO, WHAT DID YOU DO FOR UNPLUGGED?
I took a road trip in the USA followed by a Caribbean cruise. As a big lover of Country music, I started in Nashville, Tennessee. I then stopped in Memphis – in a small town called Natchez along the Mississippi – and then ended up in New Orleans.
A few days later I caught a flight to Orlando to take in some theme parks and then drove to Miami to catch a cruise of the Southern Caribbean.
"Knowing I had a full month to explore as much as I could was the push that made me book the flights."
WHAT WERE SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS?
There are too many to mention! However, some of the main highlights were:
-
Meeting up-and-coming country musician Ashley Cooke.
-
The Civil Rights Museum in Memphis was an experience everyone should experience.
-
The music and character of New Orleans and the ghost tours were fascinating.
-
Visiting and interacting with some of the locals on some of the islands we stopped on during the cruise. I particularly enjoyed my stop in the Dominican Republic where we visited a monkey enclosure and spoke to some of the locals involved in cocoa bean and coffee production.
WAS THIS SOMETHING YOU'D ALWAYS INTENDED TO DO?
It is something I had always wanted to do but getting enough time to do it was always difficult. Knowing I had a full month to explore as much as I could was the push that made me book the flights.
DID YOU HAVE ANY CONCERNS ABOUT BEING AWAY FROM WORK FOR SO LONG?
Honestly, my management was really supportive so I had no concerns about being away from work. It was booked in advance so it allowed me to ensure I had all aspects of my work covered by others in my team.
HOW DID IT FEEL (HONESTLY!) TO COME BACK?
While I could have spent forever touring the USA and probably on a cruise ship visiting more of the Caribbean, it was nice to eventually get back into some routine. After a month off, I was refreshed and ready to start back into work, so coming back was just fine.
