The BAME committee aims to give employees who belong to the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic community a voice within FinTrU. The BAME committee strives to ensure that individuals from the BAME community feel welcome and empowered within FinTrU. The committee will provide an open forum for employees to engage in discussions on race and the prejudices that the BAME community face on a daily basis. The committee will Educate, Address and Act.

We had the privilege of hosting Elijah Lawal as our guest speaker for the BAME Committee’s first Lunch and Learn. Elijah is the author of “The Clapback – Your Guide To Calling Out Racist Stereotypes”. During the session, Elijah gave us insight into his experience as a member of the BAME Community, giving us advice and the courage to be able to tackle racism. The one piece of advice which resonated with everyone the most was, “Get comfortable with speaking about the uncomfortable”.
Following this Lunch and Learn, the BAME Committee collaborated with the FinTrU bookclub to have a discussion on the book. We were able to share our own experiences that had come up in the book as well as challenging ourselves that we were not fully aware of the issues that are faced every day by the BAME Community.
At FinTrU, we have a safe and open environment to talk about racial and ethnic issues, encouraging everyone to have an open mind and willingness to learn about cultures outside of our own.
